Educational boat tours are a hit with local community

Shoreham Port hosted a successful round of their annual July boat tours this week, with around 1,800 local stakeholders enjoying the free trip around the Port’s canal. Luckily the sun was shining all week long; a perfect setting to enjoy the complimentary ice-creams and coffees. Operated by Ross Boat Tours, the passenger boat ‘Rossann’ took attendees around the Port’s canal over five days, with six tours each day complete with live commentary by Port staff on each boat.

The boat tours are particularly popular with children, who are encouraged to spot key items at the Port such as cargo ships, lighting towers and fork-lift trucks, as they listen to live commentary that teaches them about how the Port works, its rich history, and the importance of protecting the local environment. This year was no exception, with plenty of schools, childminding groups and families coming to take a trip along the canal in the sun, even spotting some moon jellyfish by the fishing boats at the end of the canal.

Alison Palmer, Year 3 teacher at St Peter’s Community Primary School commented “Our class really enjoyed their boat tour around Shoreham Port’s canal this morning, particularly counting the jellyfish in the water and of course eating their ice-creams afterwards!”.

Margie Battle, teacher at Barcombe Primary school added “What a wonderful day we had today at Shoreham Port! Thank you very much for arranging the boat trip around the port. The Barcombe Primary children thoroughly enjoyed themselves! I asked them what they enjoyed most about it, and they said the commentary on the boat! Thank you too for the ice creams and coffee - an unexpected, but very appreciated, treat”. 

A student from Worthing High School also joined the Shoreham Port team this week, spending time with a variety of departments and also attending several boat tours. He commented “I have had an amazing week at the Port and have learnt a lot from all of the departments. My favourite parts of the week have been visiting the Engineering and Operations departments, especially going up one the cranes!”

As a Trust Port we really value spending time with our local community and we have enjoyed welcoming everyone to the Port this summer, especially in this week’s fantastic weather!”

Stakeholders far and wide joined the Port for their boat tours, including an appearance from none other than Norman Cook – Fatboy Slim!
