Can I fish from the East & West Harbour Arms?
Shoreham Harbour Arms Community Organisation (SHACO) has been formed to manage angling on Shoreham Port’s East & West Arms, including night fishing.
Day time fishing is open to general public (Rod fees apply), but due to a hazard to navigation regarding light pollution, any person wishing to fish at night (8pm to 8am between 1st May and 1st September) must have a membership with SHACO.
Due to popular demand, SHACO Membership is currently oversubscribed. Please visit their public Facebook page for information about membership and waiting lists. There is no contact number for SHACO - the group is contactable only via their Facebook page.
Will you run more boat tours at Shoreham Port?
We are sorry to share that currently we are unable to find a way to effectively undertake boat tours at Shoreham Port. We have explored a number of options, but unfortunately thus far have been unable to find one that works.
We will continue to review this. We are always overwhelmed by the huge amount of support from our visitors and the enthusiasm for the many activities that take place at the Port.
But don't worry, we're still opening our doors to the public at Shoreham Port. Visit our events page for information about our upcoming events - most of these take place during summer months.
We also invite you to come to watch our Port in action and enjoy panoramic views across the lock gates and out over the harbour at Port Kitchen, our community-focused café and kitchen.
Why do you carry out biannual shingle transfers?
We complete biannual shingle transfers at Shoreham Port in spring and autumn. The aim of this vital coast protection work has a dual purpose; to protect the Port as a key local economic provider and to ensure that all the beaches between Lancing and Brighton are sustained to protect our communities from the risk of flooding. The process, needed to counter the natural movement of shingle under the action of longshore drift, is split evenly between spring and autumn campaigns, with care taken to minimise the impact of the operation on our local residents.
Shoreham Port has powers under the Harbour Act to undertake this shingle bypassing, and the operation is supported by the South Downs Shoreline Management Plan and by the two coastal defence strategies that define the needs for sea defence improvements between the River Arun and Brighton Marina.
Longshore drift is a natural movement of shingle, whereby strong waves move shingle from the west to east along the Sussex coastline due to the prevailing south-westerly winds. Since the earliest days of the Port’s entrance in its current location the shingle’s progress has been blocked by the west breakwater causing an annual build-up of approximately 15,000 cubic metres of shingle at the east end of Shoreham Beach. This prevents shingle naturally moving eastward, starving the beaches to the east as far as Brighton Marina.
Whilst the number of truck movements required to shift the shingle is considerable, it is technically the most feasible and cost-effective way of transporting these volumes and is not affected by the weather or tides as movement by barge would be. At least twice as much material would need to be transferred to make barge transport cost effective, but there simply isn’t the reserves of material or funds available to do this.
As shingle provides essential protection against the elements and absorbs the impact of strong waves, it is key that the beach is continuously managed and replenished at Southwick to keep the shoreline in place and local buildings and roads safe. Studies have shown that as a result of this shingle transfer, beach volumes along the Port have improved and stabilised.
Where can I park at Shoreham Port?
Chargeable parking facilities are available at a variety of locations at Shoreham Port. Please note that some of our locations are available during evenings, weekends and bank holidays only, as shown below.
You can pay for parking by using the PayByPhone app, by visiting the PayByPhone website or by calling or texting PayByPhone on the telephone number displayed on the signage. Find out more about PayByPhone via their website.
Blue Badge Holders may use the additional accessible parking bays provided. However, please be aware that the standard tariffs detailed below still apply. All vehicles must fit within the marked bays, and camping is not allowed. All spaces can be used for motorcycles at the normal rate.
Manual patrols of the Port are conducted randomly (24 hours a day 7 days a week) and take place in conjunction with CCTV/ANPR parking enforcement. Parking Charge Notices will be issued to vehicles in clear contravention of the signage terms.
All proceeds are reinvested in the Port’s public facilities, and charges are fair and in line with local council structures. All vehicles must have a valid cashless payment session for the entire period of parking or be authorised by GXS Services to park.
