2021 Annual Review

We are pleased to provide this update on our performance during 2021, and share the positive progress made by the Shoreham Port team. We are both very proud of our colleagues’ achievements especially set against a backdrop of challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, fuel shortages and continued disruption across supply chains.

Health, Safety & Wellbeing

Despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, in 2021 all our teams across the Port worked throughout, adapting to the changes and restrictions whilst continuing to keep the Port operational. The pandemic certainly put focus on the importance of understanding and supporting our colleagues’ wellbeing.

New Ventures

Despite the turbulent marketplace, the Port pressed on with the launch of three new business areas:

HGV Service

The launch of this operation created 14 local jobs and enables us to provide an efficient service to not only our existing customers but to new customers across the UK.

SPS

Our agency Shoreham Port Solutions recruits and provides high quality labour to our own business and other Port-wide customers.

Customs Clearance

We established a Customs Clearance capability to support a wide range of customers in the UK.

Projects

Adur Dock Development

A new facility replacing the Dry Dock shed, the Adur Dock, was mostly completed in 2021. The building, which is sustainably designed, provides a workshop space, commercial unit and the premises for our new cafe Port Kitchen.

Lock Gate Maintenance

Our Prince Philip Lock is the front door to the Port and our most vital piece of infrastructure. We carried out a full refurbishment on the spare gates, ready for a swap-out in 2022.

Green Energy Hub

In an exciting collaboration with H2Green, Ricardo and Local Fuel Ltd we are coordinating a pioneering green hydrogen project - a fantastic chance to increase our renewable energy production and decarbonise the region, bringing huge air quality and emissions benefits with it.

In 2021, our focus was to develop a deeper understanding of the experience and impact we create for our colleagues. Here is some of the key progress from the year:

Engaging Our Community

We are proud to be one of approximately 100 Trust Ports in the UK. Our purpose as a Trust Port is to improve the Port for everyone. To help us achieve this, it is vital that we work closely with our valued stakeholders and regularly engage with our community.

One of the most effective ways for us to keep in touch with our community is via our social channels and we were delighted to see our followers grow by 36% in 2021, taking our online community to nearly 9,000 people.

Events

May - Brighton Festival

We were thrilled to host the world premiere of award-winning sound artist and composer, Ray Lee’s latest kinetic sculpture project titled ‘Points of Departure’.

June - Public Meeting

We hosted our Public Meeting online for the second time, in line with Covid-19 guidelines at the time. Tom and our Leadership team shared key updates from the Port, covering 2020's performance results, safety, sustainability, and the development of our Masterplan and Values.

October - Shoreham Port – Origins and Future, Ropetackle

We were pleased to take part in this event at Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham to delve into the history of the Port and share our plans for a sustainable future.

Partnerships

Committed to Sustainability

In the year when we acheived our eighth consecutive year of EcoPort status, here were some of our sustainability highlights in 2021:

Sustainability Week

We hosted a series of expert talks and workshops, welcoming more than 250 local people to the Port to explore sustainability and environmental issues and opportunities.

Emission Tracking

Using their new tool EmiTr, we have formed an early-adopter partnership with ABL to monitor the emissions from our vessels, vehicles, and office spaces, as we transition towards cleaner energy alternatives.

Property Development

We have developed a Sustainable Property Development Template that includes responsibly sourced materials, renewable energy generators, water sourced heat pumps, and green transport facilities.
