The prestigious Marine & Coastal Civil Engineering (M&CCE) Awards, held at the annual M&CCE Expo at the NEC in Birmingham, celebrate the industry’s most innovative and inspiring achievements and projects each year. The winners of the show’s two prestigious awards - the ‘Innovation Award’ and ‘Project of the Year’ are chosen by a judging panel comprising of the most respected maritime industry professionals. The winners are chosen from a shortlist of three finalists, each of whom was given the chance to pitch their project, product or service to the judging panel at the show and demonstrate why they should win.
Shoreham Port’s Director of Engineering, Tony Parker, was proud to be on this year’s judging panel and delighted to present the ‘Project of the Year’ award to marine contractors TMS Maritime Ltd for their recently completed Swanage Pier Restoration Project.
Tony commented ‘’The Swanage Pier Restoration Project met and exceeded all of the award’s criteria for environmental and community enhancement and was undertaken with considerable care, skill and enthusiasm by TMS, whilst keeping it fully functioning for ferry and fishing activities’’.
TMS were delighted to receive the award for the restoration of the pier, which they undertook on behalf of the Swanage Pier Trust.
TMS Contracts Manager, Rob Martin said ‘’The Swanage pier restoration was a challenging project with many restrictions imposed to preserve the piers designation as both a Listed and Heritage structure, as well as protecting its location within the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, and one of very few wild seahorse habitats in the country.
It was a privilege to present the project to the MCCE Awards judging panel and an honour to be awarded the best marine project amongst very stiff competition. The success of the project is a credit to both our site team and the Swanage Pier Trust who moved mountains to raise the necessary funding for the restoration’’.
The project involved installing timber piles and structural beams to replace rotting Victorian members and returning the timber pier decking and cast-iron hand rails and other furniture back to its former glory for the public to enjoy.
Tony added ‘’The Victorian structure is listed as an Ancient Monument – the highest class of heritage listing – and is very highly valued by the local Swanage populace and visitors alike. So TMS had to meet very demanding heritage standards while under the close and knowledgeable scrutiny of the local community. A superb achievement!’’.
