As Part of National Career’s Week (5th – 10th March), Shoreham Port were delighted to volunteer at Worthing High School for their Big Interview event. The aim of the day was to give every Year 10 student (approximately 200 students) a taste of what it is like to apply for a job and be interviewed by an employer.
Shoreham Port’s Director of Corporate Services, Nicky Goldsbrough attended the event to conduct mock interviews for students, alongside other prominent businesses in the area. Nicky commented “It has been great to support Worthing High School with such an important initiative. The students were well prepared and eager to gain interview experience. The day was a huge success and I hope the students have learnt a lot and feel more confident about being interviewed and entering the world of work.”
Phil Dean, Careers/Business Partnership Leader at Worthing High commented “I am so pleased that 30 of our local business partners supported the Big Interview at Worthing High School. Nicky Goldsbrough from Shoreham Port was one of the partners who put Year 10 through their paces. The students walked in with trepidation and walked out beaming with smiles after the interview. To give the students this experience is essential to their future and without our business partners it would not be possible.”
This week Shoreham Port also welcomed Tim Rawlinson from Shoreham College for a week of work experience. Tim started his week with the Property Department, enjoying a comprehensive tour of the Port and its main tenant buildings. On Tuesday, Tim spent the entire day with the Engineering team, mostly in the Pump House learning about the locks and impounding pumps. Tim also spent time within the Operations Division – Ship’s Agency where he spent a morning on the terminals with the team. This was followed by an afternoon with the Manager of Operations & Training, where Tim was able to climb up onto one of the Port’s Sennebogen cranes and learn more about the discharging and loading of vessels.
Tim commented “This week at Shoreham Port has been amazing; with all the boats and cranes, the Port never stops. When they are finished unloading one cargo boat another one arrives. That is what is incredible about the Port, something is always happening. From a lorry picking up its load of timber to a cargo boat being unloaded. It was interesting to see all the things that the engineers and operations do on the Port. I loved seeing how the locks work and enable the boats to get through.”
Next week the Port will be welcoming another student in to see behind the scenes at their bustling local port. Further work experience placements are also planned over the summer.
