We are delighted to celebrate the success of our new in-house transport services at Shoreham Port, which launched in spring of this year. We are working in partnership with Ryder who have supplied a new fleet of HGVs (Heavy Goods Vehicles), which are now proudly flying the Shoreham Port flag on roads across the country.

Shoreham is the largest timber handling port on the south coast of England, handling up to 20% of all UK timber imports, with much of the timber that moves through our Port being FSC- and PEFC-certified and shipped from the sawmills of Scandinavia, Latvia and Russia. Despite the impact of Covid-19, the Port discharged 328,000 tonnes of timber in 2020, beating our previous record set in 2018. With the construction sector booming and the demand for timber continuing to increase, 2021 is proving to be another busy year for timber at Shoreham Port and we are thrilled to be operating our own transport provision, providing an improved service to existing Port customers as well as the opportunity to connect with new clients, offering distribution of a diverse range of cargoes.

Investing in this provision has brought with it several new jobs to the local community and we are thrilled to have welcomed six HGV Drivers to our team. We are proud Brighton & Hove Living Wage Employers and as members of the Diversity in Maritime Taskforce, are committed to promoting equality and diversity within our recruitment. We are confident that this new service will continue to grow over the coming months and years, bringing further employment to the area as well as development and training opportunities for our existing team.

We are partnering with Ryder, a leading independent provider of commercial vehicle contract hire, rental, and maintenance services, to utilise our economic, modern HGVs. Earlier this year Ryder supplied us with five DAF XF480 Super Space Cab tractor units and 10 curtainsided trailers which have enabled our skilled drivers to transport cargo efficiently and safely to our valued customers across the country.

Simon Matthews, Transport Manager at Shoreham Port commented “We are thrilled to be partnering with Ryder to utilise our fleet of liveried vehicles which enable an efficient and sustainable transport service at the Port. The team at Ryder are professional and inspire confidence, with resources to sustain their service in the long term.”

Ryder National Equipment Director Steve Williams commented “We’re delighted that Shoreham Port has put its trust in Ryder. We’re proud to partner with them as they start this exciting new venture, and look forward to offering our further support in the future.”

Simon continued “I am pleased to report that we have received fantastic feedback from our customers who have utilised our transport services following the launch of our HGV provision earlier this spring. The first phase of our transport service has proved such a success that we are already looking to expand our fleet later this year. Our team of drivers are performing excellently and have gone all in to service our customers. I look forward to welcoming more colleagues to our team as our service grows, providing a quality service to our customers while bringing new career opportunities to the local area.”

We will be expanding our HGV team in the coming weeks – visit our careers page and follow our social media channels to stay up to date with our available vacancies.
