Today Shoreham Port bids farewell to Alan Motterham, who is retiring after twenty years’ service. Alan joined the Port in 1997, initially as Resources Manager where he was responsible for managing the Operations workforce, ensuring the Port’s customers had sufficient labour to assist them with their requirements. He was then promoted to General Manager Operations in 2003 and for the last decade has led the Operations Division as Commercial & Operations Director.
Under Alan’s leadership operational revenue has significantly increased and the Port has considerably diversified, handling a broad range of commodities from timber, steel, crushed glass to rockwool, woodchip and project cargoes. Alan has ensured that the Port’s facilities and infrastructure have been well developed to meet the changing needs of their customers, with the addition of new tailor made warehousing and bespoke Sennebogen cranes, with very efficient load and discharge rates.
The Port’s customers are highly valued and Alan has ensured that Shoreham can be distinguished by the first class service that it offers. Over the years Alan has travelled far and wide building relationships with customers, with frequent visits to Sweden, Finland and Latvia, alongside much UK travel.
Alan commented “I have really enjoyed my time at Shoreham Port, working alongside some fantastic people and seeing the Port grow. There have been many positive changes which I am proud to have been a part of. We have a great set of customers who I have enjoyed serving and will miss my regular visits to them.”
Alan’s career spans over forty years in the ports industry, having previously worked for the Port of Sheerness for over twenty years. His extensive experience and expertise have helped shape the success of Shoreham Port.

In December, Alan passed the leadership of the Commercial & Operations Division onto Beth Evans-Gay. Beth looks forward to building on the strong foundation and continuing to provide a first class service to the Port’s customers.
