This month Shoreham Port bids farewell to David Miller, who is retiring from his role as Deputy Harbour Master/Pilot after 31 years at the Port.

Prior to joining Shoreham Port David was at sea gaining his Masters Foreign going certificate with time spent with Turnbull Scott and Jebsens.

David joined as a Port Control Officer in 1986. When Trinity House ended their pilotage, David was offered the opportunity to train as a pilot at the Port in 1989. David then took up the role as Deputy Harbour Master/Pilot in 2002, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to his role in the years that followed.

David commented “I have many happy memories from the Port over the years, mainly from being on the water and boarding so many vessels. It’s just the thrill of going to sea in ships, whatever their description, that’s what I’ve enjoyed the most.”

Julian Seaman, Harbour Master & Director of Marine Operations commented “I have been very lucky to have worked with David over the last 19 years, having benefitted from his extensive knowledge and experience. His contribution to the Port has been vast and I’m sure he will take a leading role in the activities he has lined up. I wish him every happiness in his retirement, he will be greatly missed by all.”

David added “I will miss the camaraderie and laughs with the close and very supportive team. However, I probably won’t miss the 02:30 alarms or the cold-water splash on a rough winter’s night!”
