We are delighted to announce that we will be growing our transport services with our own fleet of Shoreham Port Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs). The ambitious project will offer an excellent service to existing Port customers as well as the opportunity to connect with new clients, offering distribution of a diverse range of cargoes. We will also be maintaining our longstanding relationships with valued third party haulage firms, continuing to work closely with them while we expand on this additional growth opportunity.

Investing in our own vehicles gives us the opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint by reducing vehicle throughput and streamlining Port processes, in keeping with our sustainability ambitions to reach net-zero air quality emissions in 2021 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. We are committed to using green energy where possible and will include the use of Hydrogen fuel as soon as is practicable.

We support the Port Skills & Safety Sector Plan and have the shared ambition to raise safety standards in UK Ports, proactively instead of reactively. Health and safety is at the heart of all that we do at Shoreham Port, and our HGV provision will be no different. Drivers will comply with all MOT and in-house personal and vehicle safety regulations including adherence to appropriate risk assessments.

This is a significant investment in the development of our services at the Port, bringing with it several new jobs to the local community. We are a proud Brighton & Hove Living Wage Employer, and as with all our recruitment, we are committed to promoting equality and diversity as a member of the Diversity in Maritime Taskforce. We are wholeheartedly committed to building an employment culture that actively celebrates and supports diversity, at all levels, throughout our Port, and the wider maritime industry. The project will also present opportunities to our existing team for professional development and training.

Transport Manager, Simon Matthews is responsible for heading up the HGV operation, managing the fleet of vehicles and HGV drivers daily and plans to enhance our haulage service and brand across the UK. Simon joined the Port in autumn of 2020 with 25 years’ experience in the transport industry.

Simon commented, “With a small fleet of Shoreham Port liveried vehicles we will be promoting our brand across the UK and raising the profile of the Port which will bring new and exciting opportunities, offering a great service to our customers.”

He continued, “This is the most exciting project that I have been involved in. There is a very real opportunity to provide new jobs within the local community and to add to the already valuable contribution that Shoreham Port makes. The team at Shoreham Port is incredible and demonstrates, each and every day, their commitment to ensuring that the Port has a sustainable and valuable future.”
