Before Christmas a member of staff at Shoreham Port asked if it would be possible for paediatric first aid training to be offered to all staff and members of their family. As a Trust Port, Shoreham saw this as a great opportunity to offer training to other stakeholders in the community, as well as supporting their own staff.
With over half of the Port’s employees already trained in adult emergency first aid, offering paediatric first aid training has enabled individuals to feel more confident about delivering first aid outside of the workplace, especially if they have children or babies in their family.
The Port were pleased to welcome back First Aid Co-ordinators Eddie Seaborne MBE and Karyn Ashcroft from St Vincent College this week to deliver paediatric first aid training to a number of port staff and their friends and family.
Eddie commented “The Emergency First Aid at Work and How to Save a Child/Baby's Life was well received by all. It is extremely encouraging to see the importance placed on first aid by the Senior Leadership Team at the Port who orchestrated the training days.”
Karyn added “We had parents and grandparents learning life skills in CPR, choking and bleeding of young children and babies. Eddie has been delivering multiple courses at the Port over the past few years and it is always a pleasure to come back and see the team again. The Port now has over 80% of its staff first aid trained and it is fantastic that they have extended this training to close family and friends.”
Paul Johnson, Director of Compliance at Shoreham Port commented “Shoreham Port has a very robust first aid policy and with our duty of care extended over such a large area we have an aspiration for all our staff to eventually become first aid qualified. I was delighted when the Corporate Social Responsibility Group agreed to extend the first aid training to our stakeholders. The feedback from those who attended has been incredibly positive and more importantly, there are more people in the community that have the confidence and knowledge to deliver first aid when they least expect it.” Paul added “A special thanks to Eddie and Karyn for delivering the first aid training with professionalism, passion and enthusiasm.”
