All members of staff at Shoreham Port are encouraged to take one day, per year away from work to volunteer for a charity of their choice. This is a great chance for staff to give something back to the community they live or work in.
Last week, Receptionist, Jane Coleman and Logistics Administrator, Tracey Allcorn volunteered with Care for Veterans at their Worthing site. Care for Veterans support physically disabled ex-Service personnel by providing residential nursing care, rehabilitation, respite and end of life care to physically disabled ex-Service personnel and their families.
Jane and Tracey began their day with a tour of the centre and then spent the morning in Social and Recreation, meeting residents and engaging in their morning activities. They then headed out with the inhouse gardening volunteers in the afternoon and helped to clear up some of the flower beds.
Jane commented “Tracey and I had a great time talking with residents learning new dominoes strategies and gardening with the volunteers - definitely a brilliant day and a privilege to meet everyone. There are loads more events in the future to join in with and I look forward to returning to help. Thank you very much!”
Tracey added “I really enjoyed my day at Care for Veterans. I was so impressed with the facilities they have to help ex-service personnel but also people who are not connected to the armed forces. We were made to feel very welcome by staff and other volunteers and it was lovely to see the residents doing so many different activities. I would definitely recommend Care for Veterans as a place to volunteer, they are always in need of help.”
Elizabeth Baxter, Head of Fundraising & Marketing at Care for Veterans commented “On behalf of all the veterans and staff at Care for Veterans, I would like to thank Jane and Tracey from Shoreham Port for volunteering in our gardens. They worked so hard in the blistering heat and did a fantastic job, totally transforming one of our large flower beds.
The area they worked on now looks amazing and we are most grateful for their support in keeping our grounds looking attractive for our veterans. Jane and Tracey also helped out in our Social & Recreation department, working with the veterans who thought they were both lovely and very much enjoyed spending time with them.”
