Shoreham Port is a Trust Port and accordingly works closely with all of their stakeholders. As part of their approach to stakeholder engagement, they consider various funding requests each month. Where possible, the Port aims to support charities and local causes and organisations. Supporting schools is an excellent way to benefit many individuals and have a lasting impact in the community, which has been an area of focus for the Port.
Towards the end of 2015 Shoreham Port were contacted by St Peter’s Community Primary School in Portslade about a new project aimed at providing child-friendly gym equipment for pupils in their main playground. After a few months of planning the final designs were ready and Shoreham Port headed over to the school to find out more.
Providing gym equipment in the playground meant that the school were able to utilise the space available and provide an alternative means of exercise for the school’s junior pupils.
Michele Lawrie, Headteacher at St Peter’s Community Primary School commented “We are delighted and grateful that Shoreham Port have once again enabled us to make good use of limited outdoor space by providing us with the funding to enable us to develop the junior playground. We are keen to promote children's fitness and health and were able to purchase outdoor gym equipment which can be used by all ages. The funding also enabled us to develop a quiet area with picnic tables and soft seating and to improve the appearance of the playground with trees and planters.”
Sara Bassett, Finance Director & Deputy Chief Executive at Shoreham Port commented “It was fantastic to see the new gym equipment in place at St Peter’s. The playground looks incredibly smart, as well as fun and durable. I hope the playground and gym equipment is enjoyed by many children for years to come.”
