Shoreham Port regularly offers work experience opportunities to local people interested in pursuing a career within the Port or maritime industry. During two weeks in June the Port welcomed Tom Walls to gain experience working in both Accounts Departments at Nautilus House, the Port’s head office and at our Operations Division.

Tom is close to finishing a twelve month course at City College in Brighton in AAT Accounting Level 2, of which work experience was a requirement for completion of the course. Tom is interested in pursuing a career in accounts and enjoyed finding out more about what the various job roles entail.

Tom commented “It has been great doing my work experience at Shoreham Port. I live just around the corner in Southwick and walk past the Port most days so it was really interesting to find out more about what goes on there and the different roles that keep the Port running smoothly.

When I went out with Tony Oliver, General Manager Operations, on a Port tour we went up in a crane and it was amazing to see the Port from that perspective and learn about how the operations side of the Port runs, and the ins and outs of how Shoreham imports and exports cargo.

Having the experience has helped me see what it would be like to work in an accounts department. I have studied some of the theory but up until now had no practical experience in a business. I would like to thank the Port for giving me the opportunity to see how my skills would be put into practice in a business setting.”

Paul Perry, Finance Manager at Shoreham Port added “Tom showed great interest in all aspects of the work carried out in the accounts departments at Shoreham Port. He was given guided tours by our Property, Engineering, Marine & Operations departments to give him an insight and better understanding of how information is collated before it gets to us for processing through our accounts. We hope his work experience with us has encouraged him to continue with his studies and follow a career in accounting.”
