This week Shoreham Port welcomed back Jason Anker MBE from Proud 2B Safe to give an inspiring wellbeing and safety talk on resilience. Jason originally visited Shoreham Port in 2016 to give a hard-hitting talk to staff on the importance of health and safety in the workplace.

Jason experienced a life changing accident 25 years ago which inspired him to share his story with others to change the way we think about safety, not just in the workplace but in everything we do. Jason’s key message is ‘take five seconds’ to think ‘is what I am about to do safe’.

This time round Jason’s new talk focused on the importance of resilience – it’s not about the fall, it’s about the bounce. Jason delivered a powerful talk recapping over his accident and then talking in detail about how he has built his life back and the many challenges he has overcome.

Jason described how his experiences have made him more resilient and the huge part exercise, diet, sleep and meditation have played in his recovery. Jason also stressed the importance of talking about your concerns and worries, in and outside of the workplace and how if he had of spoken to his family and friends about how he felt at the time of his accident, his recovery would have been a lot quicker.

Staff were then asked to think about their own approach to life and how they react to the good and bad that life can bring.

Jason commented “We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our time back at Shoreham Port. The staff have been incredibly receptive to the presentation and the topics discussed provoked many conversations after each session. Shoreham Port has a fantastic safety culture and I commend their efforts to get staff thinking about their mental health and wellbeing as well as how they conduct themselves safely at work.”

Rodney Lunn, Chief Executive at Shoreham Port added “We are extremely grateful to Jason and Sean for returning to the Port to speak to our team. Jason’s first talk had a huge impact and encouraged us all to reassess how we think about safety. The new wellbeing and resilience talk was equally as powerful and proved relevant to everyone, regardless of their job role. We look forward to rolling out other initiatives throughout the remainder of 2018 which reiterate the importance not just safety, but health, safety and wellbeing in the workplace.”
