Sometimes, there’s no other way to get a job done than to don the waterproof clothing, attach the safety lines, take the air monitors with you and climb down into an oil-soaked hole with a set of spanners.
Our picture shows Welder/Fabricator Luke Walker on the left and Electrician/Diver Richard Smith on the right fixing a new valve onto the top of one of the Prince Philip Lock sluices. It’s heavy and messy work but essential to keep the lock working perfectly.
Tony Parker, Director of Engineering said “It’s been a good year so far for both Richard and Luke. Richard undertook and passed his Commercial Diver training earlier this year, adding a whole new dimension to his work at the Port, while Luke has just taken his final exams for his BTEC in Mechanical Engineering and passed top of his class with a Double Distinction! Congratulations to them both!”
