SUPPORTING LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT

Shoreham Port is committed to providing continuous learning opportunities for its staff. Any course or training relevant to the Port or which will enhance an individual’s job role is encouraged and explored. This ensures that the team at Shoreham are well equipped to take on the demands of a busy commercial port which has grown and diversified considerably in recent years.

Examples of training taken place so far this year include; emergency first aid, operational courses such as powered access training to operate mobile elevated working platforms and oil spill training.

Other courses included, incident investigation, VHF training, the completion of a Professional Diploma in Ship and Port Agency and leadership and management training for managers across all departments.

The leadership and management training was undertaken through the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) led by ILM tutor, Sue Noble from Noble Training. The course took place over eight months and each session covered a wide range of topics from effective delegation to how to mentor and coach different personality styles.

Between each training day managers were asked to put into practice the management and communication models, tools and techniques to build understanding and skills and knowledge in how to get the best from themselves and their team.

Katie MacAllister, Marketing & Communications Manager at Shoreham Port took part in the course and commented “I thoroughly enjoyed the ILM course, it was practical and applicable to any role regardless of which department you work in. Sue was a fantastic and supportive trainer and kept us focused and motivated throughout the course. I am pleased to be a member of the ILM and look forward to improving on my new skills learnt through their many training resources.”

Sue commented “At each stage of the learning the managers enthusiastically described their successes and challenges and how implementing these simple but powerful techniques empowered their teams to make decisions and become more engaged in their work.
