This month Shoreham Port’s engineering team took part in Confined Space training. The training took place in the Port’s renovated Visitor’s Centre and onboard the training provider Alpha Training’s state of the art mobile confined space training unit.

The training unit is fully equipped with over 30 metres of tunnelling, a 3-metre vertical entry shaft, CCTV cameras and comes with many other features to act out confined space scenarios.

Shoreham Port are committed to developing a highly skilled and versatile work force and training of this nature is always welcomed as a chance to progress the team’s skills and experience. The training was scheduled as part of a broader plan to create a training program that sets a solid foundation for the team’s future development.

Due to the varied environments that the Port’s engineering team are faced with, the team were keen to take this opportunity to learn about the correct way to manage working in a confined space as well as gain first hand practice in a confined space.

As part of the training the group used a variety of safety equipment, personal protective equipment and respiratory protective equipment. The training exercise included role playing on board the specialised truck, with the team acting out situations where they would have to work in confined environments.

Jordan Wyatt, Engineering Manager (Projects) at Shoreham Port commented “We were really impressed with Steve and the facilities for the training. I am always keen to provide my team with relevant training to their roles and this week’s training was extremely informative, giving experience that can be taken away and utilised in their daily working lives.”

Steve from Alpha Training commented “It was a pleasure to deliver the course to a group of receptive students from Shoreham Port, helping them to enhance their knowledge and understanding of confined space work.”
