PORT HOST RECORD BREAKING WEEK OF BOAT TOURS

By the end of this week around 7,800 people will have visited Shoreham Port for a unique behind-the scenes boat tour, the highest number of visitors since the tours began in 2015. The Port have extended the dates of the tours to five full days due to their popularity, with more people than ever wanting to learn more about the Port.

After a short walk across the lock gates, the tours commence on the Inner Layby and sail down the southern side of the canal, catching all the action from the terminals from ships discharging to fishing trawlers moored on the quay. The tours then return up the northern side passed the canal bank slip.

Many schools, community groups, business groups and members of the public, including families enjoy the tours and especially the free ice cream and hot drinks that follow!

This year’s event had the additional bonus of representatives from Care Ashore, a charity who set up a station within the Port’s new visitor centre for the week, to teach stakeholders about seafarer’s welfare and how the charity support injured and ill seafarers. Today the charity provides sheltered housing with support, plus holidays to seafarers in need.

School children in attendance also enjoyed a presentation from the Port’s in house Engineering team, who discussed their roles at the Port and the career opportunities within engineering.  This was run as part of the Year in Engineering, a government campaign that celebrates the wonders of engineering whilst promoting careers within the sector to younger generations.

Sharon Sullivan a local resident commented “My husband and I went on the 4pm tour on Tuesday and thoroughly enjoyed it. What a great idea! We loved hearing the facts about the Port and its history, seeing the boats up close and buildings we usually only see from the other side. I couldn’t believe how many jelly fish there were!

It was great to also hear about the strong community spirit the Port has with its residents as well. We just want to say thank you to the Port for organising the tours and the commentary and the ice cream were a lovely surprise too!”

Julie, a member of Friends of Hove Lagoon commented “Thank you for a wonderful afternoon on the Shoreham Port boat trip. We all had the most amazing time. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to go on such a special boat trip, it was very exciting. What a lovely way to spend an afternoon. Many thanks too to Shoreham Port for the much-appreciated teas and ice creams, so kind.”

Rodney Lunn, Chief Executive at Shoreham Port commented “We were delighted to welcome more stakeholders than ever to the Port for a tour and to show them what we do. Our team did a brilliant job and all their efforts are very much appreciated. We look forward to hosting the event again next year.”
