Shoreham Port are pleased to be part of a new taskforce established by Maritime UK, the industry body for the maritime sector, to address diversity, inclusion, and accessibility within the maritime industry. Launched today, Maritime UK’s new Diversity in Maritime programme will see the establishment of networks across diversity challenge areas, including the existing Women in Maritime Network plus two inaugural new groups, LGBT+ and Mental Health, which will build upon the structure of Women in Maritime established in 2018.
Launched in direct response to the government’s flagship Maritime 2050 strategy recommendations alongside the establishment of the new Maritime Skills Commission, the programme’s objective is to ensure that the sector has a continuous pipeline of highly skilled, diverse people across its shipping, ports, services, engineering, and leisure marine industries.
Maritime UK will today publish a new bespoke resource ‘HR Guidance for Recruiters’ as part of the programme, written following the analysis of hundreds of job adverts collated from across the sector. The resource highlights ways to tackle unconscious bias in recruitment, as well as the easy steps that can be taken to create a more conscious recruitment process. A series of webinars have also been launched to support individual professional development across the sector, including sessions on unconscious bias, how to excel on camera when working from home, and masterclasses on public speaking.
