Shoreham Port offered their support to Shoreham Wordfest this week, holding Port tours for 80 stakeholders this Thursday and Friday. Tony Parker, Director for Infrastructure and Climate Change and Brian Rousell, Director of Engineering at Shoreham Port, led the two guided coach tours of the Port, giving the ticket holders a unique opportunity to view the Port through the eyes of their dedicated environmental and engineering teams.
Now in its ninth year, Shoreham Wordfest is Shoreham's Premier Literary Festival. Run by a group of enthusiastic local writers and readers, the festival celebrates a passion for words written, spoken and sung, with a variety of events being held in the Shoreham area from September to mid-October. The theme of this years’ festival is ‘Shaping the Future’, with a focus on environmental issues, on both a local and global scale.
The coach tours covered the Port’s use of renewable energy sources, clean air strategy, second-life battery storage, and the proposed wildlife corridor as part of The Brighton & Lewes Downs Biosphere Partnership. Attendees also learnt about Shoreham’s EcoPort status, which was renewed in the spring of this year. Shoreham Port is one of only two PERS accredited ports in the UK, and one of fourteen UK ports who hold EcoPort status.
An attendee commented “Our tour this morning was very interesting, enjoyable and informative.”
Tony commented “As an EcoPort, we at Shoreham Port take our environmental responsibilities very seriously. From solar and wind power, to biodiversity and coastal protection, there is much we do to protect and preserve the local environment, and it has been fantastic to share this with our local community at Wordfest this week.”
This coming weekend, Shoreham Wordfest are hosting further debates and discussions on climate change and the environment, including a climate emergency summit being held in conjunction with the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) at the Ropetackle Arts Centre. Alongside high-profile environmentalists, scientists, local MP Tim Loughton and business groups, CPRE will highlight the threats and possible solutions around global climate change. The summit will be held this coming Saturday and run from 10am to 4pm.
