Staff members at Shoreham Port are encouraged to take one day each year away from their day job to volunteer for a charity of their choice. This is a great chance for staff to give something back to the local community in which they live and work. This week, Louisa Baker, Finance Executive volunteered at Care for Veterans in Worthing.
Care for Veterans provide residential nursing care, rehabilitation, respite and end of life care to physically disabled ex-service personnel and their families. The charity offers a range of appropriate solutions for people with physical disabilities and complex needs, including social and recreational therapy such as arts and games, all of which are designed to care for residents’ emotional well-being and encourage participation and increase social inclusion.
On Tuesday, Louisa was taken on a tour of the Care for Veterans’ Boundary Road centre and later took part in recreational activities, playing dominos and socialising with residents, as well as donating her time to spruce up some wooden seats to add to the centre’s garden.
Louisa commented “I enjoyed the day I spent at Care for Veterans and was glad to be able to help and make a small contribution. I especially enjoyed the time I spent with some of the veterans playing dominoes!”.
Antonia Shepherd, Fundraising Manager at Care for Veterans commented “Louisa was a great addition to the Care for Veterans team on Tuesday. She spent some time in Social and Rec in the morning and Gill who supervises the activities said that she was great with the residents. The big thank you, however, must go to her for her skill with a brush and tin of wood stain. The seats that she painted look really fantastic.”
Antonia continued “We are always delighted to welcome volunteers and their offers of practical help. We are a relatively small team of people working with the residents and ensuring that they receive the best possible care and enjoy the highest quality of life. Meeting the residents is a real joy and you are able to see exactly how the work that you have provided has made an impact on everyone that lives here.”
Emily Kenneally, Communications Manager at Shoreham Port commented “As a Trust Port, the community and our stakeholders remain at the heart of all that we do. Giving our staff one day away from work to volunteer for a charity not only gives them a chance to try something different and gain a new experience, but it also strengthens our connection with our local community. We look forward to holding more staff charity days throughout the year and we welcome any requests from local groups or charities in need of volunteer assistance.”
