DENNIS SCARD has special knowledge and experience in Industrial Relations and people management and has been the Board’s Chair since 2007. He is also a Director of Sussex Port Forwarding Limited. Prior to moving to East Sussex he was General Secretary of the Musician’s Union and a member of the TUC General Council, a position he held for ten years. He currently acts as a consultant specialising in HR and Employment Law and is a panel member of the Central Arbitration Committee and Employment Tribunal Service. He is a Trustee and Board member of Performances Birmingham Ltd which oversees the running of Symphony Hall and Town Hall in Birmingham and is Chair of The Music Students Hostel Trust, a charity providing accommodation grants to students studying at the four major London conservatoires. He is committed to maintaining Shoreham’s future status as a Trust Port whilst exploring all avenues for the development of commercial opportunities with greater private sector involvement.
JIM MAY was appointed to the Board in 2006 and was elected Deputy Chairman in 2007. He is Chairman of the Port Authority’s Development Committee, having previously been Chairman of the Audit Committee for two years. He lives in Brighton and has many links with the local community, having spent a spell as a Brighton Councillor. He is Chairman of Sussex County Cricket Club and a Non-Executive Director of NHS Brighton & Hove. He has a banking background and retired in 2006 as an Executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group. He was latterly responsible for running the RBS and NatWest commercial business in the South of England and South Wales.
HARRY LOOMES was appointed to the Board in July 2007 and is Chairman of the Audit Committee, a member of the Development Committee and The Port of Shoreham Trustee Company Limited. He spent his entire working life in public sector finance and retired in July 2007 from the post of Head of Financial Services at Adur District Council where he had worked since local government reorganisation in 1974. He is currently working as a public sector finance consultant. He was born in Sussex and has lived in the Worthing area since 1972.
JAMES FANSHAWE CBE RN was appointed to the Shoreham Port Authority Board in 2006 and is Chairman of The Port of Shoreham Trustee Company Limited and a Director of Sussex Port Forwarding Limited. He retired from the Royal Navy in 2005 after 35 years’ service, during which time he commanded HMS Hurworth, Cleopatra, Fearless, the United Kingdom Task Group and the Devonport Flotilla. He also held several multi-national and joint appointments, which included Coalition Maritime Component Commander in the Middle East and Director of Plans at the UK Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ). He planned a number of operations at PJHQ, notably the evacuation and stabilisation operations in Sierra Leone in 2000 and various response operations in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. He is the Chairman of Marine One Stop Technologies (MOST) and works as an advisor in various commercial sectors, notably defence and information technology. He has chaired, spoken, and written for, various RUSI conferences and publications and is the Chairman of the Manchester Business School London Alumni Board. He was admitted as a Freeman of the City of London in 1999 and was appointed CBE in the New Year’s Honours 2004 for services to the Royal Navy. He is a Member of the Nautical Institute and the Institute of Directors. He lives near Chichester.
BRIAN BLUNDELL was reappointed to the Board in 2004 and has knowledge and experience relating to the Port User Group and has been a member of Shoreham Private Wharfingers Association for some 25 years. He has been a Board Member since 1996. He is also a Director of Sussex Port Forwarding Limited and was appointed Chairman of the company in June 2006. Until his retirement he was Sussex Area Manager of a resident international aggregate company, having responsibility for Production of Prime aggregates, ship import and export and local road transport. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Quarrying and worked in Shoreham and other ports as well as quarries, involving development and improvement, for some thirty years. He lives on the Shoreham/Southwick border.
FIONA MORRIS was appointed to the Board in January 2006. She was also made a Director of Sussex Port Forwarding Limited in May 2006 and joined the Port Authority’s Remuneration Committee and Audit Committee in January 2007. She worked for Guardian Newspapers Limited for many years holding senior management positions including Business Projects Director, Production Director and Managing Director of Guardian Press Centre. She is currently Deputy Chairman of The Printers’ Charitable Corporation. She has lived in Brighton since 1993.
JOHN RODWAY was appointed to the Board in 2004 and was Chairman of the Audit Committee during 2006. He is a former Sussex Police Officer and at present is the Corporate and Public Safety Manager for Adur District and Worthing Borough Councils and the Emergency Planning Officer for the District. He is a company director specialising in Risk Management and Business Continuity. A Registered Risk Practitioner, John is a Member of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Managers and the Emergency Planning Society. He advises the Board on matters relating to The Civil Contingencies Act, including emergency plans and preparedness, and also supports the Board on Health and Safety matters. He is chair of the Sussex Local Authority Emergency Planning Group and a founder member of the Sussex Local Authority Safety Officers Group. As a contributor to Sussex Resilience Forum he is a member of County workgroups responsible for planning in relation to Mass Casualties, Pandemic Flu, Severe Weather and Environment.
John is a keen supporter of voluntary groups associated with the Port, including National Coastwatch and the RNLI. With the support of elected Council Members he was instrumental in the designation of Shoreham Beach as a Local Nature Reserve as a measure to protect vegetated shingle and the beach environment. As a local resident he is aware of the impact that Shoreham Port has in terms of employment and contribution to the local community and is keen to ensure that after 250 years of Port activity Shoreham retains viability as a working port.
DON TURNER was appointed to the Board in July 2007. His business background was in sales and technical support, mainly in the ventilation industry. He is a Portslade resident with a long-standing interest in the Port. His first job was working the office of a builders merchants which leased a wharf at the Eastern Arm of the Port. He represented Portslade as an elected Councillor for 22 years, serving on both East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council. Much of his work was concentrated on economic development and regeneration at local, regional and European levels. Locally, Don chaired committees responsible for Shoreham Airport, housing, grants and licensing. At regional level he was Deputy Chair of the South East England Regional Assembly, Chairman of the Regional Refugee and Asylum Seekers Consortium and a member of the Regional Housing Board. His European roles included being President of Eurotowns. He serves as a trustee of a local charity and is a governor of a local primary school. Don wants to see a modern, thriving Port that benefits the community in terms of jobs and environment.
ROBERT STILES was appointed to the Board in January 2010, having been a co-opted Member during 2009. He is a Chartered Surveyor in private practice with extensive experience of advising a wide variety of property owners and occupiers, on the acquisition, disposal and development of property in South East England. He has advised on major developments in Sussex and project managed development schemes for property companies of which he is a director. He has held non-executive directorships of regional building societies and an NHS Hospital Trust and has served as a member of the London & South East Industrial Development Board. He lives in Brighton and is Vice-Commodore of the Brighton Marina Yacht Club.
