Assistant Harbour Master

 

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of Assistant Harbour Master at Shoreham Port. 

 

The postholder will be at the heart of the marine operations department and will be primarily responsible for the team of Lock Co-ordinators. In addition, they will work closely with the Deputy Harbour Master on all aspects of running the Port, including reviewing work procedures, emergency response, procurement and working with a wide range of stakeholders.

 

A Class 1 or 2 Certificate of competency is required as occasional pilotage duties will be undertaken during busy periods in the Port.

 

This position would ideally suit candidates looking to come ashore and move into a port management role.  It is office based, requiring flexibility, thus individuals should live within an hour of the Port.

 

A knowledge of the Port Marine Safety Code and relevant statutory legislation would be an advantage.

Assistant Harbour Master

Description :

Position: Assistant Harbour Master

This position represents a significant opportunity to contribute to the ongoing success of Shoreham Port and work at the heart of the Marine Division, with occasional pilotage duties.

Location: Shoreham Port Authority

Hours of work: 40 hours worked flexibly throughout the week/weekend as directed by the Deputy / Harbour Master

Key Responsibilities

1. Providing a high quality, safe, efficient and cost effective service to all Port Users. Proactive and timely approach to day to day enquiries from agents, Masters and stakeholders. Collaborating with Port Officers and liaison with external agencies.  

2. Assisting the Harbour Master and Deputy with managing the operation of the marine office, including statistic collating to be promulgated throughout the port and government agencies, weather and tidal data, permits, forms and guidance notes.

3. Develop, review & improve procedures associated with the marine operations.

4. Identify and take responsibility for the delivery of activities and/or projects required to satisfy Port Operations.

5. Port Control - Daily contact point with Port Control

6. Nicholson’s Marina – Develop, review & improve procedures associated with the Marina Area and berth holders

7. Fuelling Operations – Day to day management of the ports fuelling facility

8. Watering of vessels – day to day management of vessels watering requirements

9. Wreck removal – Arrangement for wrecks to be removed

10. Visiting fishing vessel – Daily liaising with Port Control of berthing arrangements, vessel requirements and handling of the landing dues.

11. Assisting with port security

12. Education of Stakeholders, leisure and recreational users

13. Emergency and oil spill response     as outlined in Shoreham Port’s emergency procedures.

14. Oversee the oil spill equipment & response trailer.

15. Assisting the Harbour Master with Incident investigation and complaints

16. Procurement for the marine division

17. Assisting the Deputy Harbour Masters with running of the Port Marine Safety Code Exercises.

18. Train as a pilot, so that occasional pilotage duties can be performed during busy times at the port.
